Shelter Pups

Lucas and I met at the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter on Jason Street in April. I wont say it was love at first sight. In fact, I ventured in to meet a Weimaraner, but that didn’t work out. It is lucky that Lucas caught my eye, considering he couldn’t even see out of the kennel he was locked in. I liked the name, so I peeked in. I found a dog that looked quiet and sweet, and so we took him home.
Lucas has some issues. Maybe that was why he was in the shelter, but maybe not. He was picked up as a stray by animal control, and no one knows his story. By the way he growls at kids, dogs and strangers, I’d say he was probably not socialized all that well. Oh yeah, and he has the worst case of separation anxiety his vet and trainer have ever encountered. Enter xanax.
It’s controversial, I know. But if you saw the panic attack Lucas suffered every time we left him alone, you’d know this is the humane thing to do.
I have always believed in adopting animals. What I didn’t always know was how much work that entailed. Lucas has taken me to the limits of frustration and back. Don’t get me wrong, I love this little pup, but boy can he test my patience. I suppose that is what makes adopting animals all the more special. They take lots of work, but I can tell you that two months after his adoption, I still get a wonderful feeling about keeping Lucas out of harm’s way. We did the right thing.
